What are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars that erupt from the gum line typically between the ages of 17 and 21. These late erupting teeth are an unnecessary evolutionary hangover. Our ancient ancestors needed this third set of molars because their coarse diets lead to tooth damage and loss by this age. Today, improved diet and oral hygiene means most patients have all of their adult teeth, making third molars entirely unnecessary.
Why are Wisdom Teeth Extracted?
Due to their late eruption, wisdom teeth can cause numerous oral health concerns that make it necessary for us to recommend tooth removal. Some of the most common reasons for wisdom tooth extraction include:
- Impaction – wisdom teeth are often unable to erupt from the gum line
- Crowding – there may not be adequate space to accommodate the additional set of molars
- Decay – crowding and impaction both increase risk for wisdom tooth decay
- Misalignment – wisdom teeth may shift surrounding teeth out of alignment, undoing the effects of orthodontic treatments
How are Wisdom Teeth Extracted?
If your wisdom teeth have fully erupted from the gum line, we will pull them. Pulling a tooth requires that we numb the area around the wisdom teeth. Then, we use a clasp to move the tooth back and forth until it pulls free from the socket. Surgical tooth removal is necessary when wisdom teeth do not fully erupt from the gum line. We will numb the area around their tooth. Then, we use a scalpel to expose the tooth below the gum line in order to gently remove the wisdom teeth from their sockets.
What Happens after Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
Following your wisdom tooth removal treatment, you will likely experience some minor discomfort or inflammation. We will provide you with specific instructions to ensure a quick, comfortable recovery, but most patients are able to make their complete recovery using just over the counter pain relievers and cold compresses. You should feel completely back to normal within a week, but if you experience worsening pain, severe swelling, or signs of infection, you may need to come back to our dental office for additional treatment.
