Younger teeth require extra help when it comes to cavity prevention, as children are most vulnerable to cavities between ages six and 14. During this time, dental sealants and fluoride treatments provide an extra boost of prevention. Dental sealants are translucent coverings painted onto the chewing surface of the molars to “seal” the tooth from acids and bacteria that cause decay. A fluoride treatment strengthens enamel to protect against cavities. Both are quick, painless treatments completed at the end of a regular preventive appointment.

When should my child have their first dental appointment?
Your child should have their first dental appointment around the time of their first birthday, or pretty soon after their first teeth start to come in. After that, they should start getting regular checkups around the age of three.
What will my child’s first visit be like?
When we see new child patients, the initial visit is more focused on making them feel comfortable in the office rather than performing any treatments. We’ll give them a brief tour of the office, perform a short exam, and maybe do a dental cleaning if it’s okay with them. Then, we’ll discuss with you how to take care of their growing smile. We find that by taking this first visit slow, the future ones tend to go much better.
