October is National Dental Hygiene Month—an entire month dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of oral hygiene. As your dentist in Falls Church, we are proud supporters of National Dental Hygiene Month. We are committed to creating healthy, confident smiles that last a lifetime. To achieve your goal of optimal oral health, you must practice proper oral hygiene. In addition to your home oral care routine, you need to visit your dentist twice a year for a dental checkup and dental cleaning in Falls Church. With the right preventive care at home and from your dentist, you will set the foundation to a lifetime of oral health.
Healthy Smiles with Oral Hygiene
For the past seven years, October has been dedicated to raising public awareness about the importance of oral hygiene. Your oral health is vital to your ability to eat and speak correctly with healthy oral functions. In addition, the health of your smile also impacts your confidence and quality of life. However, what you may not know is that the health of your teeth and gums also impacts your overall health. Poor oral habits will not just damage your smile, but can also damage your overall health.
To protect your smile and your health, you need to ensure you are practicing healthy oral habits.
Brush Your Teeth Twice a Day
The key step to protecting your oral health involves brushing your teeth twice a day. Using a soft-bristled toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste, brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day. While holding the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle, brush all of the surfaces of your teeth, including the inner surfaces and the chewing surfaces. Do not forget to brush your tongue and be careful not to brush too hard.
Floss Your Teeth Daily
In addition to brushing, you also need to floss your teeth to clean the areas a toothbrush cannot reach. Using an ADA approved floss, gently insert the floss in between two teeth. Form a “C” shape around a tooth with the floss. Then, slide the floss down to the gum line and back up to the top of the tooth. You need to repeat this process for each tooth once a day.
Visit Your Dentist Twice a Year
Your home care is only half of the care your smile needs to stay healthy. You also need to visit your dentist twice a year for a regular checkup and cleaning. With a regular cleaning, we will remove the plaque and tarter that was not removed with brushing and flossing. We will also perform an examination to evaluate the health of your teeth to quickly address any complications.
