Back to School Tips from Your Family Dentist

August 25, 2017

family brushing teeth together As the summer draws to an end and you get ready to send your little ones back to the classroom, pay a visit to your family dentist to ensure you send your kids back to school with healthy, happy smiles. We know the back to school preparation checklist gets long, but keeping your child smiling should be a priority.

Back to School Dental Checkups

Stop by our office for a back to school dental checkup. During this appointment, we’ll get your child’s smile ready to face another school year. With a thorough examination and teeth cleaning, our team will ensure your kid’s smile is completely healthy. We can also fit your child athlete for a custom sportsguard.

Pack the Right Snacks

Another way to help your children maintain their healthiest smile is providing them with tooth-friendly snacks. That means cutting out sugary and highly acidic foods and beverages. Vegetables, cheeses, and nuts all offer oral hygiene boosting benefits.

Fun with Brushing & Flossing

Getting up early to brush and having your little ones to sit still long enough to care of their smiles can be a challenge once the busy school year begins. However, you can make brushing and flossing more enjoyable to encourage your kids to keep up with their at-home oral health care routines. Here are some ways to make brushing and flossing fun for your kids:

  • Keep a daily brushing and flossing chart. Let your child check off their completed oral hygiene tasks or use stickers to mark brushing or flossing complete. You can even offer a small treat for a week or more of completed oral hygiene.
  • Let your child pick a brushing song. These songs should be at least two minutes long, and your little one will need to brush throughout the duration of the song. This is a fun way to ensure kids brush for at least two minutes at a time.
  • Practice flossing on toys. You can use stuffed animals or other toys with large teeth. This gives your little one the opportunity to practice their flossing techniques.
