Children are often too busy playing outside and running around to worry about their oral health. This means, as the parent, it’s your responsibility to not only ensure they maintain good oral habits but also help to get them excited about taking care of their teeth and gums. We know it’s hard, which is why we’re offering 5 ways to boost your children’s oral health in Falls Church.

Start Early

Between the ages of 6 and 14, children are most vulnerable to cavities, which is why cavity prevention is essential. As kids love to eat candy, chocolate, and anything sticky or crunchy, all that unnecessary sugar and carbohydrates can cause plaque to build and eventually create holes in the enamel. The result is a cavity that will need to be filled to prevent further infection.

From the moment your child’s first tooth pops through the gum line, you’ll need to begin brushing, in addition to scheduling their first dental appointment. As they grow, it is important to encourage your children to keep brushing and flossing their teeth to help keep cavities away.

Use Fluoride

The fluoride found in water is already a benefit to yours and your children’s teeth, but did you know that using a fluoride-based toothpaste can also combat cavities and tooth decay? Better yet, when you take your child in for their regularly scheduled six-month visits, request a fluoride treatment to help strengthen the enamel and protect against cavities.

Dental Sealants

While you’re inquiring about fluoride treatment, also ask your dentist about dental sealants once your child’s permanent teeth come in. These translucent coverings protect the chewing molars from acids and bacteria that can lead to tooth decay. They’re painted on to the surface of the tooth, and it is a quick and painless treatment option.

Drink Plenty of Water

While your child may want a juice box or soda, they’re filled with sugar and are not only harmful to their overall health but also to their teeth and gums. Instead, offer water as an alternative. As they run and play, it will help to keep them hydrated as well as stimulate saliva production, which works to wash away any food debris or bacteria living in the mouth.

Stick to a Regime

Not only is it important to start early with good oral habits, but it’s also important to make it a routine. Make sure they’re brushing their teeth twice a day for two minutes. This is how long it takes to thoroughly remove any and all bacteria from the mouth. In addition, ensure they’re flossing at least once and day and doing it properly. Incorrect flossing techniques can damage the gums. If needed, have your children use flossing picks or a flat beginner’s floss.

Don’t wait until it’s too late! The earlier you start to instill good dental habits, and the sooner you begin working alongside your child’s dentist, the better off their oral health will be.
