You’ve heard dentists throughout your lifetime say something along the lines of “You need to practice good oral care habits to maintain a healthy smile for a lifetime.” But, what does she really mean when she says that? Well, one important component of a solid dental care routine is visiting Tyson Dental Esthetics for semiannual dental checkups and dental cleanings in Falls Church. The other part is keeping up effective dental care at home. In order to do that, you need the right products that will work the best for you.
Choosing the right toothbrush:
When choosing a toothbrush, consider who it’s for. Dr. Berrada and Dr. Glickman both recommend soft bristled toothbrushes for both adults and children alike to protect your enamel from unnecessary wear and tear. Pick a toothbrush that fits your mouth, preferably with a small, round bristle head. Kids will most likely respond to a toothbrush embellished with their favorite cartoon characters.
Choosing the right toothpaste:
If you ever need help choosing a toothpaste, it’s best to ask our dentists which one is best for you. But, if you’re looking for a toothpaste between dental appointments, you should only choose a toothpaste that is “ADA approved,” or approved by the American Dental Association for safety and effectiveness. Try to find a toothpaste that’s infused with fluoride to prevent cavities. If you have a specific dental problem like tooth sensitivity, you can get a specialized toothpaste like Sensodyne.
Choosing the right flossing tools:
Flossing is probably the most overlooked component of a patient’s dental routine. Studies show that most patients don’t enjoy tediously removing plaque from between all their teeth, but it’s necessary. Thankfully, there are tools that can make flossing an easier, more fun task. There are individual flossers that can make it easier to reach between each tooth without winding and unwinding manual floss. We also recommend a water pick, or oral water irrigator, if you have dental restorations that trap food or braces.
Choosing an effective mouthwash:
If you think mouthwash is just here to freshen your breath, think again. Mouthwash does much more than simply making your mouth minty—it’s helpful to fighting off dental bacteria that could cause gum disease. The best mouthwash to invest in is a product that has fluoride and that’s alcohol-based. We only recommend that adults use mouthwash. If your kids want to rinse their mouth after their dental routine, use water so they don’t swallow an alcohol-based mouthwash.
